Costello Lab at UCSF

Our lab investigates the role of genetic and epigenetic alterations in the formation of sporadic cancers, with a focus on brain tumors. We are an interdisciplinary team of molecular and cell biologists, cancer biologists, bioinformaticians, statisticians, and clinicians dedicated to the same cause – understanding the genetics and epigenetics of glioma so we can better treat it.

Investigating the Genetic and Epigenetic Basis of Gliomas

Brain tumors kill nearly 14,000 people every year. Here in the Costello lab, we investigate the genetic and epigenetic basis of these tumors with the goal of better detection and therapy.

From Tumor to Experimental System

By deriving cell lines from patient tumors, we are able to recapitulate glioma biology in the petri dish and better study what drives these aggressive tumors.

Reconstructing the Evolutionary History of Gliomas

Our interdisciplinary team  of scientists uses next-generation sequencing and cutting-edge molecular biology techniques to piece together how tumors evolve from the very first cell.
